There are people talking about boycotting Chili's due to their treatment of a Veteran on Veteran's Day.

What chain restaurants do YOU think should be boycotted due to their treatment of FOOD? ;)

***
Speaking of Veterans, well, a different kind of veteran at least:

Remember to get me your votes for Week 0 of the Veterans poll by Thursday! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/950046.html

Under "Information you can use": I'm ready to make two announcements that I will now bury in a Green Room post. So hopefully you're paying attention. I'm not just putting it as a comment though, so that's good, right? ;)

(Seriously, I'll make an "official post" about it as a reminder, but I'm thinking about it now...)

You will have two byes this season, good between now and the Top 50.

That's two "free passes", where you can sit out and rest a week. Life happens, especially around the holidays. So there's two times you don't have to worry about it. Once you miss the third time though, you are automatically eliminated. There *is* a Patron level though where you can earn a "Bye to give someone else" though. (For those keeping track of such things)

Also - the Sign-Ups are still open: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/945807.html and that's tied into the bye situation. I WILL be closing them at the deadline to get your entries in for Week 1.

I can't say the actual date for that yet (obviously) but for those still trying to make up your mind, or those trying to get their friends to join in on the party, that is going to be the time to keep an eye on.

First!

Two byes sounds great to me.

Do you know, I can't think of any chain restaurants I really actively dislike? Oh wait, no --Denny's. I refuse to ever eat at a Denny's again.

I hope more people do sign up. There are some old friendly faces I'd like to see, for one thing.

Ok. I avoid Applebee's for crimes against food. Also O'Charley's and Ruby Tuesday too. To me it's just paying extra for the same kind of things I make in my own kitchen, with a less flavor and I have to wait a long time to get it.

Generally, I'd prefer to spend my money on something local. Usually those places are fresher, more creative. However, I LOVE Outback. The Wallaby Darned frozen drinks are incredible, a Bloomin' Onion and Aussie Cheese Fries...SO GOOD! Juicy steak, thick baked potato...gah, I am feeling hungry.

So, in other news, I just went to a seminar on effective communication. Did you know that words comprise just 7% of what we take in as we attempt to understand other people? That puts us in a unique position with Idol, using *only* our words to communicate ideas and emotions effectively! I <3 a challenge.

Yuck!

There is a Denny's in my town that we are pretty sure is just a drug laundering front. It's been open for years but there are never cars in the parking lot and the two times we have gone there were two servers in the whole place.

One year an ice storm knocked our power out for four days and, in desperation, we went there for heat and hot food. There was one other table sat at the time. We waited about 90 minutes for lunch for our family of four - it was nuts!

I didn't have time to read & vote for the newbies poll, seeing as I had to drive to Lancaster and back and participate in their improv festival over the weekend, but I thankfully got through 25 veteran intros yesterday, so I'm a little over halfway done now. It's going to be challenging to pick my top 5 favourites.

I read an entry yesterday from someone I knew, who I had no idea I'd introduced to Idol in a previous season! That was a cool discovery.

Oh, and I actively don't eat at McDonald's because of their treatment of food.

"Only" 2. Hahahaha. That's what I was used to when I played in season 6 & 7. If he's offered more byes since then, he was clearly being generous.

And we had more people in those seasons, too, so that's upping the challenge even more.

Hahahaha, having held a job in the food industry to put myself through uni, I make it a point not to eat anywhere OTHER than my own kitchen. I am not kidding.

My experience at Chili's involved bad chicken tacos and the result looked like this:http://www.extremepumpkins.com/pukingpumpkin.html

I once worked for a convenience store kitchen. That is, the kitchen in their business office in one of the industrial areas in the city where we made the sandwiches sold in the stores. I will never, ever eat any of the prepared sandwiches from that chain because anything that fell on the floor went back in the sandwich except the slices of processed cheese. Why just the cheese? Because the filth from the floor would be obvious when it stuck to the cheese. I also tell friends and family not to eat there either. Don't buy 7&11 sandwiches!

Now I know it's not a restaurant chain, but they make and sell food, so I think they count.

Patron level?

Patisserie Valerie. It's a chain in the UK. It gives off an overwhelming vibe of 'we're too posh for the likes of you to eat in here' and then the food tastes incredibly underwhelming if not outright bad.

Ooh two byes. Will have to see how long I can hold on to them.

How do we know what patron level we are?

Applebee's has upped their game in the last year or so. Went to our local one over the summer and was pleasantly surprised. It's not a place I'd go out of my way to eat at, but it's nice knowing that they're capable of giving you a decent meal.

We lost our only Outback a couple of years ago. I'm not sure if another restaurant took its place.

As somebody who currently works in food service, I guess I'm a bit more forgiving if something falls on the floor. The trick is to abide by the 5 second rule. Why isn't whatever fell tossed? Because that'd be wasting money.

There are degrees of damage, however. A brief oopsie is one thing. Something you didn't realize fell and has been stepped on? Yeah, into the trash it goes.

Considering it has been at least a decade since I ate at Applebee's maybe it is time I give them another shot!

Growing up, my town only had an Applebee's and a Ruby Tuesday at the mall - and that was THE high school date night, Ruby Tuesday for dinner, walk the mall a while and then go to the movies - also at the mall, lol! There was also a Red Lobster.

I remember my mom saying "If only we could get an Olive Garden..." The town has grown and now we have the OG too. Which my kids LOVE for special occasions like huge plates of pasta on their birthdays.

I only ever did season 9 and we got 3 and i used those all up by week 14 O.o

pretty sure there are less contestants this season so it makes sense to only give 2, I am challenging myself not to use them unless I really really have to. No self doubt allowed!

I haven't eaten at most of the places mentioned because we don't have them here (except McDonald's, of course). I once drove to Burlington, Vermont to try Applebee's. It was decent, but I wouldn't care if I never ate it again...

Only two byes?? Yikes! I am going to do my best to not use mine until March, but Gary, I know you sometimes give extenuating circumstance byes - aside from the obvious (giving birth or death in the family) are there any other circumstances that would qualify?

I worked in a restaurant in college. I was front of house, but more than once I saw someone accidentally sling a piece of meat from grill to plate and miss and it would hit the floor - where they picked it up, rinsed it off and threw it back on the grill. I want to believe that was enough to kill the germs...

Were you still able to survive until you were voted out after week 14, or did you end up having to drop?

I can't remember which weeks I used my byes in, but it would be easy for me to look it up, considering I have a post in my other journal that links to all of my entries with the week number listed.

I don't go out to each much due to not having much of an income. When I do, it's usually to local places, not chains.

I've had bad experiences everywhere but Ruby Tuesday, and that's a minor miracle considering half of my high school worked there.

Oh well?

I second that Applebees has upped their game in the past little while or so. My brother works for them and occasionally (read: at least once a week) brings home food, and it's always pretty good. Better than I expect from an Applebees, at least. xD

Chili's and Applebee's are my least favorites but I do love Maggie McFly's (small chain, huge menu, really solid stuff) and Outback and Maggiano's  (small Italian chain like an Olive Garden but better).

I ran out of byes and sacraficed myself in week 14.

I remember one of the topics I bye'd out on because I actually came up with an idea and was too afraid to write it.

I never shared much of my writing ever before the last LJI and since then I've read some "prose" (I guess) at open mic nights. So even those 10 entries (11 if you count the sacrafice post) that I did write, made me a more confident writer.

I think I might've sacrificed myself with an alt account one of the last times I played, but I don't remember because I wasn't paying enough attention to what was happening due to lack of time.

Fear can be one of the biggest challenges in our lives. I've certainly let it prevent me from doing some things. I try not to let it get in my way so much nowadays, and have confessed to some pretty big things that I was concerned about admitting publicly. It gets easier.

From inside the Green Room wing on meteor base 'Merica, the baseball cap wearing rebel, Cloworora, stood, propped up against the metallic walls of the literary cyber-terrorist [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm's lair.

"You know, not to be glib, compadres, but I think we need to send Gary back to school. Either that or common core math is seriously worse than we imagined. We're on day nine of week zero. Day. Nine. Week..." Cloworora casually pointed out. Following a snort, bright blue eyes peered from under his cap. The huddled masses of LiveJournal Idol Season 10 squinted back at the hatted freedom fighter as though he'd cut a particularly horrid brand of flatulence.

"...And this is why I sidestepped the minefield of introductions, jeez," [livejournal.com profile] cloworora muttered while folding his arms over his chest in a slump against the wall.

Cloworora calmly reached from under his neck, scraping his nails across his facial stubble.

"Does it have to be week, though? I mean, maybe out here, on the meteor, weeks take longer. Makes sense, we're further out than Sol," the blue-eyed, baseball cap wearing bloke mused bluntly. His finger tapped against his chin. "Maybe 'Merica weeks. Space weeks? Gary Weeks? Gary cycles? Cycles?" He mused.

With a widening of his eyes, Cloworora snapped his fingers. "Trecena. I've figured you out, Gary. You're secretly Aztec. Which...explains everything."

Hoisting his elbow up in a crook beside his mouth, the rebel stage whispered to the other contestants. "Run! He's going to sacrifice us all!"

I don't care what anyone says, subway is not food. The bins are always soggy, they don't use enough meat and then try and make up for it in other mediocre toppings. Blah.

My first job was at Subway. I used to enjoy their food, but not after I worked there.

Their food is not fresh. The chicken comes frozen in bags with some gelatinous fluid, the BBQ chicken (no longer sold there) would get caked to the pans so badly it took hours of scraping to clean them off. Once I dropped a tin of lettuce on the floor and they instructed me to sweep it back into the tub for use.

The smell nauseates me to this day.
