Does 1 vote matter?  Yes, it does.

Because this weeks results came down to a single vote. Not only in the polls, but also with the Jury's vote for who would receive immunity.

If you are looking at the poll right now, you are probably wondering what I'm talking about.  But I'll explain.  The Jury vote for immunity was forced to the tie-breaker of "need based".  Meaning "who actually needs it?" If more than one person was tied for immunity, or if granting immunity to the person in need would eliminate someone *else* in need... then we would go to the next round of tie-breaker.  Or if there was a massive knot of contestants with the same amount of votes, which almost happened...

The Jury was deadlocked, so the "need based" tie went in favor of granting it to [personal profile] codenamewanderlust

So they are safe from the vote.

Which means the next two lowest vote-getters are the two leaving us, and becoming a part of the Jury. (Who, as I
said, will be having a huge part in deciding how this mini season is going to play out. If this doesn't prove that, nothing will.)

Our newest Jury members are:

Thank you so much for coming out for this mini season.

I hope we will continue to see you in the Home Game, and cheering on your favorites.

I am sorry to see you two go. I have enjoyed your entries so much, and have looked forward to reading them. This result surprises me.

I am so, so sorry to see and leave us. I have enjoyed their entries so much and hope they will homegame even though they have responsibilities on the jury. So sad to see you go!

Congratulations ! Rock that immunity!

Ouch. I'm sorry for this result. At least there is a Jury now, however?

Two very strong writers whose pieces have been long and heavy on story and world-building this season. I've enjoyed both.

I especially have found myself thought-provoked by tonithgreat's work over these past few months.

Ah, damn. Two people I thought for sure we'd see in the Top 20. Yet another reminder that nothing is certain in Idol, I guess. :(

Dang it! I’m bummed. I forgot how the jury worked, and didn’t realize how close it really was. I also forgot to come back and finish commenting this evening. I just haven’t had the time I need to engage as fully as I’d like here. At least I feel good about the entry I was voted out on. As much as I’d have liked to see the real top 20, it stings less when I’m cast out on a week where I feel like I made a good showing. See you all around!

Thank you, everyone, for your support and comments this season. I appreciate them.

Oh, and if you're in LA, watch for posted concerts that are coming up. A week from today included. We'll be with Dr. James Lawson, a civil rights activist who worked for years with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

As far as tie breakers go, in lieu of special tie-breaker rounds and weirdly complex sub-juries of sub-juries (as the above described situation looks to me on first glance), I really liked the "fractional elimination" we used in LJ Shootout (the short lived photo contest run along similar lines to LJ idol for anyone else reading), which is to say in the case of a tie, both contestants are "50% eliminated," (or 33% in case of three-way-tie etc etc) which doesn't affect them at all until one of them reaches 100% eliminated. And I think there were some other rules like a "bye" caused you to be 33% eliminated so you COULD use two byes and hope you're never more than 33% eliminated or you could not. And in the first round there was only 50% of a person eliminated so no one was actually voted out the first round (and the first few rounds there were often multi way ties so at first it takes some repeated last place finishes to be eliminated). Altogether I found it a very nice streamlined system .... but then again you probably like overly complex head-to-head runoffs with subjuries of subjuries ;)

I'm more frustrated that I haven't had a chance to read a lot of entries lately.
Usually after it matters.
I don't think my votes would've changed anything much though. Still, I dislike not being as deeply involved as I feel I should be even though I think people know I'm still here with love.
