There's a poll going on, a couple of them in fact: http://community.livejournal.com/therealljidol/357651.html - I would be remiss if I didn't point you their way!

***

I ended up having a really good conversation last night. One of those "explaining Idol to someone who has heard of it but doesn't really understand what is going on" moments that can go either way.

This time though, the question was asked "what sorts of people sign up" - and so I told her.

I grabbed examples from this season and seasons past, going over just how different people are on the surface.

Sometimes folks get to the point of realizing that we aren't really all that different underneath it all. Sometimes people realize that and still don't like each other. :P

Or their writing doesn't appeal to the other one. (The funny thing being that the feeling tends to be mutual. Which I think speaks quite loudly to the nature of taste.)

Sometimes it takes an outsider to view just what an amazing thing it is to have the opportunity to get to know so many incredible, and truly diverse, people from all walks of life. I think that's a big part of the appeal of something like this, the people and their experiences. Even the ones that don't seem to work out so well at the time have a way of finding context. (or maybe that's just for me - "well, that's how it worked out, what did we learn from that?")

***

I have to run into work. Maybe more on that later. Just because the "being mostly asleep brain" still isn't quite functioning. :D

***

Hope you are having a great day! (and can manage to wake up more than I am at the moment. Unless of course you get to sleep in!!! Lucky you!)

I've been up since 6AM because of the morning sun, even though I have room-darkening shades. This is the major reason why summer is not my favorite season :p

I don't know about that, Gary. I signed up for Idol because I was told I would meet all kinds of exotic people from far-off places and then you give me [livejournal.com profile] intrepia who lives down the block. Not as advertised, I say!

All kidding aside, that has been the best part of Idol for me. I have met a ton of really great people with whom I know I will continue to be friends even after Idol is over.

Hey I love this community. Even if there's wank, I haven't experienced it to get too out of hand. I dunno, I like everyone here, it's been a great experience for me. :)

Even if perhaps I don't like their style of writing, I still like the person, we all have our own tastes. :)

Anyway, I found out I don't have a credit at LCC, because I haven't presently passed the class, so I'm sitting on the edge of my seat until exactly 9;00:01 am and will be placing myself in the classes. One of them is damn near full and it's making me nervous.

Then more exercising, and see if I can get my friend to show up tomorrow and help me clean and organize my house. I'm okay with the cleaning, while sometimes I do need a little motivation. The organizing however? Pretty crap at it. I just don't "see" where things can go to make the house look nicer. Someone else does it and I go "duh! That's a GREAT idea!" I just can never come up with it myself. *sadface*

Anyway, off to read.. and keep a massive eye on the clock.

Idol definitely allows us to get to know and appreciate people we might never have met otherwise. It kind of reminds me of making friends in college. You're thrown together for a common purpose, and a magic net holds you together for a relatively short time. You forge your bonds and try to hold on once the net dissipates.

I have to say I was very surprised by Idol. I joined because my friend [livejournal.com profile] morning_stand participated last year, though I will admit I paid absolutely no attention to any of it. When it came around again, I figured it would keep me busy for a few weeks while I found a job.

Little did I know that I would stay in for months. And that I still don't have a job (except for that short period in the middle).

Though I hope that will change. I have a second phone interview for a job today! I am excited and nervous! It would bring BIG changes, but it's the first job IN my field I have really had the chance for since graduating last May.

Oh and I have met some AMAZING people through Idol. I would have never suspected it to be this awesome honestly.

I could go on and on about that, but sleep deprivation might mean it makes very little sense at the moment (I went almost 24 hours without sleep yesterday and only slept about 5 hours last night).

I think Idol has been wonderful for meeting people near and far. Many of the Idol participants have become friends, and I'm so glad to have found them!

As for being near to other contestants, I think I'm the only one of us currently on Long Island, though a few Idolers are in the city.

I never expected to actually make friends through this, but now I have a whole bunch of people I definitely want to keep! And a few more I'd like to keep in touch with but am too shy to add XD

Date: 2010-06-25 04:42 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] spydielives.livejournal.com
I would add them anyway. What's the absolute worst thing that would happen? They don't add back. *shrug* It might be that they don't notice the add. Maybe their journal is normally reserved for people they only know face-to-face. Who knows, really.

But on the whole, most Idolers are nice folk. If you really want to read someone on a regular basis, in my opinion (not that it counts for much) you have nothing to be shy about.

I have met some really awesome people here. I don't think my friends' list has EVER grown so quickly (or been so big!) Of course, you could all drop me after the competition...

I think the polls are going to be really interesting this week, it could really add a very visual element of "see the influence of the friends list" that people banter about (though obviously friends are able to to sign up for the community, it's an extra step and requires some dedication/more rapt attention to the competition as a whole).

I am trying to adopt my Zen-approach this week, nonetheless.

I highly recommend road trips. If the mountains can't come to you, take the scenic route.

There are some folks I've met that I find interesting and fun but probably fall more into an *acquaintance* type category and there are some who I think I've made a real connection with that have become an invaluable part of my little world. I've been fortunate enough to meet some of the most fantastic people through Idol.

The diversity around these parts are one of Idol's most amazing strengths... the exposure to people we normally wouldn't have the opportunity to meet and interact with. It can really open us up to a whole new universe and that is an amazing thing.

Regardless of how the vote shakes out this week, I've got no regrets. This has truly been a privilege... there are some seriously amazing people here.

I hope I don't fall into the "acquaintance" group after it's all said and done with :-p

I do agree that the diversity is amazing. I have met and interacted with so many different people.

*HUGS* Let's hope the vote goes good for you this week :)

LJ Idolers are many different things, but primarily, they are good folks. My F-list has grown exponentially as a result! Seems I'm always talking to my husband about something one of you said or commented on my journal, and then I have to explain it's "someone I know from LJ Idol."

Let's just say, there are some things that perhaps my kids or grandkids (if I decide to have any that is) shouldn't know about me out there in online blogs (perhaps one day I should make those private, huh?)

I think that idea is really awesome though. I would love it if I could find stuff like that about my grandparents or parents. I love hearing about their personalities and lives.

I really have no idea what the future will hold though. No freaking idea. It never ceases to amaze me how much things change.
