There's a poll going on, a couple of them in fact: http://community.livejournal.com/therealljidol/357651.html - I would be remiss if I didn't point you their way!

I ended up having a really good conversation last night. One of those "explaining Idol to someone who has heard of it but doesn't really understand what is going on" moments that can go either way.
This time though, the question was asked "what sorts of people sign up" - and so I told her.
I grabbed examples from this season and seasons past, going over just how different people are on the surface.
Sometimes folks get to the point of realizing that we aren't really all that different underneath it all. Sometimes people realize that and still don't like each other. :P
Or their writing doesn't appeal to the other one. (The funny thing being that the feeling tends to be mutual. Which I think speaks quite loudly to the nature of taste.)
Sometimes it takes an outsider to view just what an amazing thing it is to have the opportunity to get to know so many incredible, and truly diverse, people from all walks of life. I think that's a big part of the appeal of something like this, the people and their experiences. Even the ones that don't seem to work out so well at the time have a way of finding context. (or maybe that's just for me - "well, that's how it worked out, what did we learn from that?")
***
I have to run into work. Maybe more on that later. Just because the "being mostly asleep brain" still isn't quite functioning. :D
***
Hope you are having a great day! (and can manage to wake up more than I am at the moment. Unless of course you get to sleep in!!! Lucky you!)

Date: 2010-06-25 12:43 pm (UTC)I've been up since 6AM because of the morning sun, even though I have room-darkening shades. This is the major reason why summer is not my favorite season :p

Date: 2010-06-25 12:44 pm (UTC)All kidding aside, that has been the best part of Idol for me. I have met a ton of really great people with whom I know I will continue to be friends even after Idol is over.

Date: 2010-06-25 12:49 pm (UTC)Even if perhaps I don't like their style of writing, I still like the person, we all have our own tastes. :)
Anyway, I found out I don't have a credit at LCC, because I haven't presently passed the class, so I'm sitting on the edge of my seat until exactly 9;00:01 am and will be placing myself in the classes. One of them is damn near full and it's making me nervous.
Then more exercising, and see if I can get my friend to show up tomorrow and help me clean and organize my house. I'm okay with the cleaning, while sometimes I do need a little motivation. The organizing however? Pretty crap at it. I just don't "see" where things can go to make the house look nicer. Someone else does it and I go "duh! That's a GREAT idea!" I just can never come up with it myself. *sadface*
Anyway, off to read.. and keep a massive eye on the clock.

Date: 2010-06-25 03:15 pm (UTC)Little did I know that I would stay in for months. And that I still don't have a job (except for that short period in the middle).
Though I hope that will change. I have a second phone interview for a job today! I am excited and nervous! It would bring BIG changes, but it's the first job IN my field I have really had the chance for since graduating last May.
Oh and I have met some AMAZING people through Idol. I would have never suspected it to be this awesome honestly.
I could go on and on about that, but sleep deprivation might mean it makes very little sense at the moment (I went almost 24 hours without sleep yesterday and only slept about 5 hours last night).

Date: 2010-06-25 03:39 pm (UTC)As for being near to other contestants, I think I'm the only one of us currently on Long Island, though a few Idolers are in the city.

Date: 2010-06-25 04:42 pm (UTC)But on the whole, most Idolers are nice folk. If you really want to read someone on a regular basis, in my opinion (not that it counts for much) you have nothing to be shy about.

Date: 2010-06-25 04:00 pm (UTC)I think the polls are going to be really interesting this week, it could really add a very visual element of "see the influence of the friends list" that people banter about (though obviously friends are able to to sign up for the community, it's an extra step and requires some dedication/more rapt attention to the competition as a whole).
I am trying to adopt my Zen-approach this week, nonetheless.

Date: 2010-06-25 06:09 pm (UTC)The polls are giving me ulcers/nausea/gas this week. I need to find my Zen because I done gots me a bad feeling I does. :-(

Date: 2010-06-25 06:06 pm (UTC)The diversity around these parts are one of Idol's most amazing strengths... the exposure to people we normally wouldn't have the opportunity to meet and interact with. It can really open us up to a whole new universe and that is an amazing thing.
Regardless of how the vote shakes out this week, I've got no regrets. This has truly been a privilege... there are some seriously amazing people here.

Date: 2010-06-25 06:48 pm (UTC)I do agree that the diversity is amazing. I have met and interacted with so many different people.
*HUGS* Let's hope the vote goes good for you this week :)

Date: 2010-06-25 07:13 pm (UTC)Generation after generation of people never really had much information on what previous generations of their family were actually *like*. Sure, they had stories and documents in the more organized families. But a lot of it ended up being lost, or pieces needed to be fit together.
One of the things that usually got preserved and handed down though were personal journals.
How do you think online journals are going to impact that?
Will they eventually disappear, as the internet continues to expand leaving no trace? Will they be left out there as "you were here" footprints that make it easier for your kids and grandkids to "get to know" about how grandma once posted a meme about what sort of teacup she would be?

Date: 2010-06-25 07:20 pm (UTC)I think that idea is really awesome though. I would love it if I could find stuff like that about my grandparents or parents. I love hearing about their personalities and lives.
I really have no idea what the future will hold though. No freaking idea. It never ceases to amaze me how much things change.
