I was just looking over a photo stream that a friend of mine posted over on Flickr of his family vacation.
It's one of those annual muti-generational things that has been happening, *thinks* honestly I'm not sure how long, I'd have to ask, I know at least that my friend's father used to go on the trip as a kid. I'm not sure if they went before that though.
They rent these cottages out on the beach and spend a week in an area that is still not build up, so when you are out there it feels like you are the only people.
Just you and your family on a beach vacation for a week. They always come back with such stories, and missing it so much.
Seeing the pictures, I can see why. There's just something special about the whole thing.
A sense of family, of place, and belonging. It's something primal. (I've seen people who "don't need anyone" group together with other folks who "don't need anyone" and bond over it!)
When you aren't fortunate enough to be born into it, you make your own. Sometimes with more success than others. But most of us try.

Heh, not really sure what that has to do with anything. Although, I guess bonds in Idol or something vague like that. Wasn't the intent, but I'll take it as being as good of a transition as any.
It's sort of the mental follow up (in some ways) to the conversation that I had about the idea of passing down information from one generation to the next, and the place of livejournal (and places like this) as tools in that. (mentioned in yesterday's green room toward the end of the day)
somethingsomethingsomething - there's a poll. (No real transition there, but I do need to mention it)

poll. pool. swimming. beach. beach vacations. There you go. Kevin Bacon.

I hope you all are having a wonderful weekend surrounded by the people you love, and who love you.

Btw - I don't know when other areas celebrate it, but since it's happening here now, with pretty much all the big events happening this weekend - Happy Pride Week.

Date: 2010-06-26 09:20 pm (UTC)Sad to say, my children haven't actually had a family holiday yet. They weren't a big part of my childhood (we went on the sum total of one holiday to Cornwall, although I had a couple of trips with school and went to the Isle of Wight with a friend when I was little) so I don't really have the mindset of holidays. Combine that with children who do NOT sleep if they're not in their own bed and it's not high on my priorities - I took my son away when he was about 10 months to the Canary Islands and although we had a lovely time, I got no sleep at all that entire week and when you're by yourself with no one else to watch the baby while you catch up with forty winks, it becomes pretty exhausting. I have plans for something that should be acceptable to everyone though - I just need to save up my pennies to be able to do it.

Date: 2010-06-26 09:36 pm (UTC)My LJ friends list is still on the same page it was this morning - and Idol friends page has the earliest post from this morning on the bottom of the first page.
There's a weekend summer doldrums that hits harder than any other factor out there.
I think your kids want to have a family holiday in Florida. *nods*
Well, OK, we *know* one of them does! The rest can be convinced.

Date: 2010-06-26 10:25 pm (UTC)Funnily enough, we were talking about Florida last night and how I should aim to get out there next year, scout it out as a retirement option... Never let it be said that we do not plan years in advance!

Date: 2010-06-26 10:08 pm (UTC)I went to the book store today. I wrote a few messages to random strangers, too. Mostly talking about Havel and beer. These seem like good potential friends to me.
Not sure what I am doing tonight. Possibly just reading.
Been feeling a bit off lately. Meh.

Date: 2010-06-26 10:15 pm (UTC)So I am very glad for the longer voting/reading time. Also, as crazy as it was to have to write -two- entries while on holiday, I'm also really grateful that that little twist happened last week. Because otherwise, I imagine the topic A poll would have closed while I was away, which would have meant I wouldn't have had time to read anything at all before closing :(
We went to the beach today. I put on so much sunscreen that I think the sun reflected back off me and burnt a hole in itself or something.

Date: 2010-06-26 10:46 pm (UTC)Anyway, we're eating some Subway and chilling for the moment... Just thought I'd check in and see how my LJ is going. ^^

Date: 2010-06-27 03:32 am (UTC)As for families, I'm going to a reunion of my boyfriend's for the 4th of July weekend, and we're going to a reunion of sorts for one side of my family later in the month. When I was little I always felt bad for kids from smaller families because they didn't have enough aunts and uncles and cousins to play with - heh.

Date: 2010-06-27 04:15 pm (UTC)I have had some very productive days, including replacing two 25yr old exterior light fixtures *shudder* I only have two more to do, but they are not in as bad shape and can wait a while yet.
Now I am going to get something cold to drink and settle down with a proof copy of WTRS.
