I was really busy lately, so I brought in some hired help. My friends from United Airlines will now be handle any and all complaints. Just raise your hand if you need help with something, and they will show up and escort you to a special debriefing area we have set up. If you're feet are hurting, don't worry - they will just carry you there.

I've also brought in some old friends from Pepsi to help with our new ad campaign - where voting in LJ Idol polls destroys all racism and everyone is happy. Don't believe me that is what occurs? Go check out the new one and see for yourself! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/1003004.html

I've also brought some folks from Livejournal itself in to consult on some long term planning ideas and to help with general communication. Those are areas they have always been outstanding in, so I'm sure this is going to be *great*!

Please help welcome our new additions to the staff!

For those of you on Facebook - I'd highly recommend checking out my FB friend (and all around good guy) Steve Helling's pictures and stories from his trip to visit Syrian refugees in Iraq. They are all public, so just click here https://www.facebook.com/steve.helling and go see them!

He had the opportunity to see first hand what a lot of people talk about, but not many fully understand.

First?!? Frist?!?

There's a lot of stuff going on here in Kizzy Land but I don't have the energy to enumerate it. Between being up for promotion at work, the possibility of relocating, and my own personal bugbears (I'm not having the greatest time mentally right now), I'm so scattered that I don't know where I'm going half the time :p

I saw the photos on FB, Gary. You know how sometimes something renders you mute? His photos...yeah.

With Pepsi and UA on your team, Idol will be generating a twitterfest in no time. Look what they've done for their own businesses! Yes, Pepsi and UA should hold their heads high, contributing in such a positive way to the general public opinion of Big Soda and airlines.

I don't drink soda...so have no knowledge or interest in anything Pepsi is doing...but this UA thing IS interesting!

When you purchase an airline ticket you enter into a contractual agreement with the airline. Part of that agreement is that you acknowledge that you can be "bumped" off a flight at any time when the airline deems the need. (And we all know, from South Park that baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad things can happen to you if you don't read the fine print. :P )
The amusing thing to me about this situation is several-fold. First, the proliferation of mobile cams...and how it both reveals and corrupts the truth. Second, why on earth didn't UA just continue to up the monetary reward if someone would just agree to get the hell off the plane?! And third...the human nature part which is HYSTERICAL and those of us who are parents or teachers know this far too well...all of those folks videoing this icky encounter and shouting down the security are the same folks who by the graces of chance were not the person randomly chosen to exit the plane!!!

Humankind, you crack me up.

I fly a ton for work, and I've never seen an airline bump people from a plane after everyone was seated. It seems like the sort of thing you should figure out before you let people board, so something like this doesn't become an issue. Also, as you said, offer more money. Everyone has a price! Giving people $500 more sure would have beat the money they could potentially lose from what did happen.

What I find interesting is how in this social media-saturated world we live in, perception is so much more important than reality. Sure, the airline does legally have a right to bump people from their seats whenever they want. But the perception out there is that the whole thing was wrong and they never should have done it. Which, again, they probably should have thought about in the first place.

I've been on several flights where folks were asked to deplane. Not sure what happened at the gate...but it does seem to occur. Definitely should be figured out beforehand - even while selling seats maybe? ;) I'm the type that will grab offers because hey getting First Class for free next time is a win/win in my eyes. Of course, if I "had" to be somewhere that's a different experience. I'm positive there was someone on the plane who would have left for the right price.

Social media is a ginormous Catholic nun wagging her finger and shaming everyone. It's also a fickle fickle beast and will turn on you at a whim.

Oh, interesting! Usually the flights I've been on where they need volunteers, they get it all sorted before we board. Maybe I've just been lucky that there have always been volunteers!

And I totally agree. Sometimes they offer like $300 just to wait two hours for the next flight. Like yes please! Free money! But yeah, they just had to make it worth it to someone, but I'm sure they could have found volunteers.

Hahaha. That's a perfect description! I love it!

*nods* I've missed more than a handful of flights because I do love to volunteer for the bumps. It's an adventure. But I get it, this guy wasn't up for it...and surely UA could have found another "volunteer". Maybe one of those outraged passengers? Easy to be outraged when you didn't volunteer or get picked. Ha. I would like to know if he really is a doctor. Waiting an entire day for the next flight...is definitely problematic.

"I would like to know if he really is a doctor."

Hear, hear!

I know I'm old fashioned, and well old, but I am not just horrified at the measures Airport Security took to remove that man. I am horrified by his behaviour. Since when is it acceptable that if you don't like what authorities are asking you to do you behave like a spoiled child and throw a tantrum, screaming and fighting? His behaviour was appalling, undignified and inappropriate. If he is a doctor and with appointments, so what? Appointments can be postponed. He might only have been delayed a few hours. Would anyone in their right mind allow a situation to get to that point? It took three big men to get him out of his seat, that indicates to me that he put up quite a fight. Unacceptable.

If he were my doctor I would be looking for a new one first thing.

Just saying. 😊

That whole post leads me to think (In a PeeWee Herman voice) It's OPPOSITES Day!!

Also, can I get free or reduced flights now that we are partnering with UA? I need a vacation!

You couldn't ask for a better publicity team, Gary. And they are willing to carry you around, though not necessarily where you want to go.

On a more serious note, wishing those of us who are keeping Passover a very blessed Holy Season.

I won't be starting my reading till after sunset tonight, so don't be moving those entries. Did anyone else find this topic challenging?

Nothing like flying the " friendly Skies" I guess. If they make you switch, they usually compensate you w hotel lodging, a free ticket or something. Not sure why this passenger was so vehement about refusing to comply.

I read somewhere that he's a doctor and he had to go meet patients. I'm not sure if maybe there were no more flights out that night?

Part of the issue with United, apart from general overbooking, which I think is a crime given that they also have the right to bump you (one or the other is okay with me, but not both)... trying to fit FOUR airline crew members onto a full flight seems excessively demanding to me.

And if they didn't get enough takers (apparently, NONE for what they were offering), maybe it was time to charter a small plane or a chopper to do the transport?

Because after all, it was United's business problem. Not the passengers'. And squeezing one or two extras on a plane is different from four people on an already full flight.

Missed the whole Pepsi debacle, but I accidentally bumped the remote last night and got switched to a news channel that features the squealing and PR disaster. And apparently, there was more as he stumbled back onto the plane, looking thrashed. :O

Idol improvements? Nobody talks on Dreamwidth (my friends' list is pretty silent there), but it would probably get rid of the issues of voting via Facebook and Tumblr and Twitter, which I would be happy with. ;)

They're not usually much of an issue in the earlier parts of a season or mini-season, but near the end? As in, top 20 and on down? They can have a huge impact. Sometimes, they don't! I think Season 9 probably was pretty light on them at the end. But overall, people who don't compete with their RL presence are usually at a real disadvantage near the end.
