Good Morning and welcome to July!

More importantly than that - welcome to the day of the first topic/prompt is going to be posted and we get started with whatever this particular journey is going to look like.

I have noticed a couple things on that thread though that I need to remind YOU about.

Make sure you are linking to a specific entry and not your main journal. That becomes important when your weekly entries because who wants to scroll down to find which one you are asking people to check out?
The other is locked/friends only journal entries. I can not, and will not, tell anyone "You need to make those public!" because it's your space. BUT I can tell you that if no one outside your immediate circle is able to read it, no one outside your immediate circle is going to be able to enjoy it/give you feedback and ultimately cast a vote for it to keep you in the competition. So that's your choice, but that's some unsolicited information.

We currently have 43 contestants so far. Which is pretty good. I wasn't sure what to expect this time around. Included in those are *3* people with the possibility of crossing the 200 entry mark! 1 of them is almost guaranteed to do it. For the other 2 it will depend on various circumstances. But if nothing else they will come a little closer.

It's the start of new week, a new month, and for many (including my old job) it's the start of a new fiscal year! It's a chance to start again.

It's nice to see so many familiar faces, but encourage your friends who might not have played before to join in on the fun. Or at very least "fun"...

Of course there is a part of me that wants the safety net of sentimentally considering that I am getting on the bicycle myself after a longer than usual break. But new voices keep everyone on their toes as well. Both are awesome, and appreciated though. Let's never lose sight of that both of those thoughts can coexist.

I've been watching a lot of movies lately thanks to the library and free streaming sites, some of which are actually legit. ;)

I've also been getting back into reading. Which has been a treat.

Mind you most of my day has been taken up with refreshing various job sites and submitting applications. But those things have been a nice break.

I will say though that my time may end up being more limited than I originally thought. I've been on the phone all morning with the top leaders of both "major US political parties" begging me to become their nominee.

After last night, I completely understand. Neither of them "showed up" and they want a strong leader who will strike fear into the hearts of all enemies. I've already notified Putin that he has until next Tuesday to write 3 entries, so his war effort in the Ukraine is going to take a back burner until then.

I promise to both support programs for the greater good *and* streamline the government. No more 3 branches. It will just be one branch. Me.
It's easier that way. Less widespread corruption and more centralized corruption.

I was asked in a previous thread if there were going to be any special twists or rules for this mini season. Which is a fair question, since pretty much all of the mini seasons have had some sort of twist or special rule in the past.

This is more of a "back to basics"/getting my feet wet again experience. I'm sure it's going to involve trial and error from everyone because it's been longer than normal between seasons. Honestly, I'm not even sure how much of the same person I am right now. Figuring out how that is going to impact the experience, maybe that's the twist. :)

Then again, hopefully everyone has had some changes in their lives (for the better) since we were last gathered. I know not everyone can say their changes were for the better unfortunately. But hopefully those (somehow) ultimately lead to better changes down the road.

I'm not sure if it amuses me more or causes me more angst actually putting my old writing out there in the world. Probably a little of both. But it has started serving it's purpose of making me think more about writing. (to be determined if that is "I should do more of it" or "What the hell was I thinking actually writing this grap?" ;)

If the plasma center was closer I would have already been there... has anyone done that? What was the experience like?

Over the next couple of days, the US Supreme Court is set to rule on a lengthy list of important cases. I was just reading the list of pending cases to be decided over the next couple days and it has the potential to be ground-shaking... however I DID notice that the two most important cases aren't listed. Pretty sure the Supreme Court WILL be ruling on them soon -

Last night was sad at our house since we were rooting for the Oilers in the Stanley Cup Finals. I know there's a ton of hockey fans in this group so you will know exactly what I'm talking about. ;) (On the other hand, Idol does traditionally have quite a few Canadians, and that is pumped into their bloodstream at birth. Some go ahead and do a full transfusion to get it out but most are too polite to risk offending someone by bothering them for a transfusion to get rid of a gift. ;) )

For those people who DO know what I'm talking about - for all of the "Hockey doesn't belong in Florida... I think it's time to start asking 'Does hockey belong in Canada?" The last time a Canadian team won the Stanley Cup was 1993!!! :O

Do you have anything exciting happening this week? I've been told to expect an email asking me to fill out a background check for one job I interviewed on. I also have a decent feeling about another one (who already had me fill out that background check paperwork pre-interview) plus of course all the other applications I've put out there over the past couple months. (I assume if I haven't heard *anything* in a couple weeks that it's a 'no", but honestly there were times when I was the hiring manager when we were SO swamped trying to keep up that I didn't have time to set up interviews. So maybe there is some hope on those as well.

How are you doing? Getting ready for the topic tomorrow?

Again, I have to remind everyone that it's a "slow start"/"soft open" situation. People who know me can probably already feel my nervous energy about wanting to get a running start. But I'm taking a suggestion for a couple contestants from last season, and we'll see how that goes. :)

Apparently, the Cubs did something last night.

My guess is that they stole a picnic basket, or perhaps were filmed cuddling a kitten. Maybe they pretended to maul someone.

There was a comment that I saw yesterday about the difference between a "competition" and a "contest", and how that individual sees Idol.

I point this out, because it's the perfect thing for newbies to see, and I hope that they did.

Even the definition of "what is this thing called Idol" is something that changes every season. YOU get to take part in that. This is your Green Room. This is YOUR SEASON. It doesn't matter if you've been here 10 years or you showed up yesterday.

Which is something that always gets me excited at the start of every season. Because I have a plan. I have a template. But so much of what is about to happen is going to play out between all of you, and is going to shape what Season 10 is all about. I'm really looking forward to that!

We're probably going to be keeping that open a little later than usual. But as I've said previously, I planned this as a "slow start" to get us through the NaNo period and maybe let people get their sea legs back, before ripping them back out from under you and throwing you into the pit of sharks!

We also have something that occurred to me as I was prepping this season. It doesn't matter what previous year we are talking about, there is always at least one person who tries a new format (cartoons, songs, youtube videos, etc) and a bit of push back that comes with it from some circles that say "that's not writing!"

There is also always someone who does "better" than you, personally, might think they deserve to do, because what they are doing isn't suited to your individual taste.

Which usually puts me into lecture mode, and at some point I bring up at writing, on any level, is going to garner differences of opinion and that even the winners for the Nobel Prize in Literature face the "That's should not have won!" stigma.

I say it all the time. This year? Oh 2016, after so much loss you wanted to give me a present didn't you?

I'm really hoping that the series of interviews that I've given for LJ Idol this season have actually generated some buzz and attracted new writers into the fold! I should have stuck to the original plan.

I've been wanting to go see one of my favorite bands. Their lead singer (after a solo show) told me last Fall that they were coming back in March 2014, and I waited patiently for the date to be announced. There was absolutely no way that I was going to miss it.

As soon as the date was announced, I told everyone I knew about it.

I don't drive, so I was hoping that I could catch a ride with one of them.

It turns out, it was a FREE SHOW. So, absolutely no reason why anyone would want to miss that.

One by one, they all cancelled on me.

Most of them had good reasons, but reasons only get you so far in the face of rock-n-roll shows! ;)

I was prepared to take a cab home if I had to do so... until I found out it would have been about $40 to actually get me home!

I threw out the invite again the day of the show. No response.

I contacted the promoter and found out that the band came on *at 8pm*! Fantastic! I would miss Survivor (something I almost never do) but I could actually catch the very last bus heading in my direction and get home a little after 11pm. WELL WORTH IT.

The opening act was scheduled for 7pm, and I get there at 6pm because I am in such a hurry to get to this place and ran for the bus that would get me there earlier.

While I'm waiting, I get confirmation that a friend of mine IS coming after all - he can't stay late, but he is willing to drive me home! The plan is coming together!

7:30 rolls around the sound guy is still setting up his gear. Not the band's gear - HIS GEAR. My friend arrives and starts asking "what's going on?" I can't find the promoter, and the lead singer of the band has wandered off (doing his pre-show whatever) so I go up to said sound guy, and I ask him "what time is the main act going on?"
He tells me "11pm".

So we leave - I get a ride home, pissed off for missing one of the my favorite bands. But I do get to watch Survivor, and spend some time with my family. Which I guess is nice too. ;)

I later get a message on facebook saying that the band started at 9:30 FROM ANOTHER FRIEND, who tells me that he could have given me a ride home.

I should have stayed. I had made a plan of action, and doubts caused me to waver from it.

Having healthy self-awareness and being able to re-examine choices is a good thing. Having that nagging doubt that "I've made a mistake" though can eat away in the back of your head and make you jump when you could have rode things out to their natural conclusion. I see that in life, and I see that when people write for Idol. They over-think things and end up with something that isn't as good.

Trust your gut.

Unless of course your gut tells you to not sign up for Idol, in which case your gut is lying to you and needs to go!
